Ma Huang is used in weight loss and fat burning drugs to boost metabolism. Ma Huang is a Chinese desert herb called Ephedra sinica and contains the alkaloid ephedrine which is used in a number of over-the-counter remedies and also enjoys notoriety in the United Kingdom where it is a C-Class drug because of its use in the production of methamphetamines and its intensive stimulant effect.
In the UK. C class drugs carry a jail term of up to 2 years for possession and 5 years for trafficking/selling. Other C class drugs include anabolic steroids and prescription drugs such as valium. Ephedrine can raise blood pressure, increase anxiety and cause dehyration and also has the potential for dependency for heavy users.
Ma Huang is similar to Mormon Tea and which comes from the plant Ephedra nevadensis. Mormon Tea is found naturally growing in the South Western United States and parts of Mexico where it is known by the name 'potpotillo'. It has traditionally been used as a natural remedy for syphillis and gonorrhea and as a natural, caffeine-free beverage. E. nevadensis does not contain ephedrine however.
