The University of Evansville was established in 1854 as Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institution in Moores Hill, Indiana. The first building was completed in December of 1856. A second building, named Carnegie Hall after the main donor, Andrew Carnegie, was finished in June of 1908.

In March 1917, George Clifford presented at a session of the Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church and proposed moving Morres Hill College to Evansville, Indiana. In 1919, the school was renamed Evansville College. Then, in 1967, the college was renamed yet again the University of Evansville.
