An employability portfolio is an effective tool used by educators who are serious about meeting their obligation to prepare students for entry into the world of work. Most of us are familiar with the concept of a portfolio, especially as it relates to creative endeavors such as art, photography and design. The artist collects samples of his best work for display or to demonstrate his skills to prospective clients or employers. This same concept may be adopted by anyone including trades people, professionals and even high school students.
Why Create a Portfolio?
Many schools do indeed have their students gather items for a portfolio, but few actually train their students how to properly use their collection. One example of commitment to the concept of student portfolios is Tec Voc High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This program was conceived when it was recognized that graduating students going into job interviews performed poorly because they were unprepared and lacking confidence. They were unable to make the connection between school learning experiences and employment for pay. Administrators and teachers came up with a corrective strategy incorporating employability portfolios.
The Tec Voc High School Portfolio Credit
The Tec Voc program has students meet with a teacher advisor, in groups, from grades 10 to 12, twice a month. During these sessions pupils learn employability skills and build a portfolio specifically designed to help them choose and acquire careers. The portfolio lessons also benefit individuals preparing for post secondary selection interviews. After successful completion of this program and preparation of a portfolio, students receive a course credit.
