Before her diagnosis of breast cancer, Carol Ott Schacht knew very little about the disease. Coping with cancer taught her many lessons, both about seeking treatment and about life itself. In a personal interview, Carol shared tips for seeking treatment and coping with the disease.

Researching Breast Cancer Treatment Options Maximizes Positive Outcomes

When Carol received the diagnosis, she and her daughter spent hours at the dining room table with their laptops, researching options for treatment. “We googled things like ‘cancer outcomes,’ and we started narrowing it down to different places I would go and seek my treatment,” she said.

From the start, Carol took a proactive approach to her treatment, asking as many questions as she could of medical personnel and other patients. She assumed they would all tell her the same thing, but that wasn’t the case. It’s often up to the woman and her family to choose between several treatment options, Carol said. To get doctors to think outside of the clinical environment, she would often ask, “If I were your sister, what would you recommend that I do?”
