For Metro Vancouver cities that are in the Olympic thick of things – Vancouver, Richmond, North and West Vancouver – the world’s attention is inevitable. These, along with Whistler, are the host cities for the Olympics. Other cities, such as Surrey and Abbotsford, are hosting massive “live sites” – meccas of local culture going on every minute of the day, paired with huge screens carrying live broadcasts so fans can gather together and share the thrill of every awe-inspiring event as it happens.
Cities that are not hosting official sporting or cultural events have to work a little harder to take advantage of the Olympic opportunity, and have come up with some interesting and fun ways to do so.
The City of Burnaby, for example, is hosting a unique event that’s not only kindling Olympic spirit, but providing visitors with both local and global history lessons. Burnaby Village, the living museum that saw the Olympic Torch pass through on February 11, is hosting a Village Scavenger Hunt — Trek to Mont Blanc every weekend throughout the Olympics and into the Paralympics.
