Took Off Running is an audio history CD that features old timers and historians talking about the history of race and cultures in West Virginia along the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. Austrian, Irish, Italian, and German immigrants came to work during the mid to late 1800s as stone cutters, road builders, and miners. European immigrants also came to help build the S-P Turnpike as well as to work on the railroad all through West Virginia.
Slavery and Prejudice
Slavery and the presence of African American communities along the Turnpike is talked about on Took Off Running. Wood County along the Ohio River, had the largest population of agricultural slaves, but there were also slaves in other counties along the Pike. The Order of Red Men and the Ku Klux Klan are discussed as early organizations that were active and influential in the area as groups formed in response to perceived threats from non-whites and Catholics.
While the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike was used to transport slaves it was also used by the Underground Railroad as a way of secret escape to freedom for slaves. While racism and prejudice existed in the olden days of West Virginia, there were also abolitionists opposed to slavery, as well as slave owners who freed their slaves prior to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Took Off Running talks about clashes between cultures and beliefs during the early history of West Virginia.
