In 2004, right about this time of the year, the University of Florida decided it had enough of Ron Zook as the Head Football Coach. So Zook was relieved of his duties after an embarrassing loss to Mississippi State.
Zook had taken over after the abrupt resignation of Steve Spurrier following the 2001 season. He was not the first choice of the school to take over for his former boss. But, since Spurrier was such a legend in Gainesville, first as a player and then as a coach, it was hard to find a coach willing to follow that act. Bob Stoops said "no thank you." Mike Shanahan too. Zook was the first coach to say yes.
The University of Florida is a difficult place to "learn on the job." Expectations are as high there as any place in college football. If the Gators aren't winning championships, then heads must roll. Combine this with the fact that at Florida, you are competing in the toughest conference, the SEC, in the sport. So Zook was almost doomed to fail from the start.
